simple ways to treat body odour naturally

Hello beautiful people,

I am very excited as I write this post because today I want to share with you some tips, tricks and DIY’s with which you can treat body odour naturally – without using the commercial, chemical-laden deodorants. These tips have worked very well for me and I hope you find them useful too. Around last year, this time I quit using commercial deodorants because I realised they did more harm than good. I am so glad I switched and have never looked back since.

So, shall we begin? Let’s get started.

1. Maintain a good level of hygiene

There is no point in using deodorants (artificial/natural) if your hygiene is not optimum. Maintaining a good level of hygiene is more important when it comes to treating body odour naturally. It is a good practice to scrub and shave your underarms once a week. Scrubbing brings out the dead skin cells and it is generally a good thing to scrub before shaving. It makes shaving a lot easier, cleaner and smoother.

You can use any natural scrub for this – I use Patanjali’s ubtan or a homemade cleanser consisting of Green Gram flour/Chick Pea flour. Add a pinch of wild turmeric powder into your scrub to get rid of skin discolorations, if any.

Make sure to slather on Aloe Vera gel post shaving. It soothes the skin and controls body odour to a good extent.

I use Bon Organics Aloe Vera gel and it is the most natural one I’ve found. Find Bon Organics here – https://bonorganics.com/

2. Dusting Powders are a saviour

It is important to keep in mind that whenever you use natural or safe methods to control body odour, you will sweat. There is no escape to that and I think it is good to sweat and a mild odour is something very natural and nothing to fret about. However, if you want to reduce the sweat (and the stickiness that comes along), you can apply Abzorb Clotrimazole Dusting Powder on your underarms. The powder is antifungal and antibacterial and keeps your underarms dry. This tip will definitely be useful for those living in hot, humid climates.

Abzorb Clotrimazole Dusting Powder is not a natural product. But, I strongly beleive that not all chemicals are bad and choosing the right ones are very important.

3. Keep wet tissues handy

This comes in handy when you are on the move. Using wet tissues to wipe your underarms makes them fresh and clean. This is really useful during travels when you want the instant freshness. On other days, you can use a damp tissue to wipe your underarms once or twice a day. This the is the most simple way to prevent body odour.

Make sure to use alcohol-free wipes like this one.

4. Use natural deodorants

There are numerous recipes for natural deodorants on the Internet. However, I have 2 favourites that I want to share with you today.

1) Lemon Deodorant

This is my absolute favourite and I’ve been using it for the last one year. It is nothing but plain lemon juice and works wonderfully to control the odour. You may read more about it here and make sure you give this a try. Trust me, it is the easiest way to control the body odour.

Recommended: An all-natural, homemade deodorant

2) Baking Soda and Coconut Oil Deodorant

For this, you will need Baking Soda, Coconut Oil, and Arrowroot Powder.

Coconut Oil: It is a wonderful base because of its antibacterial properties. It also protects against the odour-causing bacteria. Also, the oil prevents the formation of fungi, yeast & bacteria in your deodorant.

Baking Soda: Neutralises odour. Just beautiful stuff, I tell you.

Arrowroot Powder: This is the star. Even though it is the baking soda and coconut oil doing all the work to keep the odour at bay, I believe it would be impossible to use the deodorant if not for arrowroot powder. This one ensures that your armpits do not get sticky as a result of using coconut oil. It effectively absorbs the excess moisture and leaves your armpits dry.

Ratio: 5g each of Baking Soda, Coconut Oil and Arrowroot Powder. I follow this up with a few drops of essential oils.

Mix it nicely using a fork till they combine well and store it in a clean, dry container.

You can increase the quantity of arrowroot powder if you feel the mixture is oily or sticky. You can play around with the ratio till you get the consistency you wish for. It is all up to you.

Make sure to give these tips and DIY’s a try. I agree that it is more time consuming but it is not as difficult as it seems to be. You never know, you might just stop using the poisonous, chemical laden deodorants.

A few things to keep in mind while using natural deodorants –

1. For the baking soda deodorant – If you store it well and do not use your hands to scoop out the mixture it will easily stay put for up to 2 weeks. However, if you plan to make a bigger batch, do add a few drops of natural vitamin E oil which are also called as tocopherol. This is a natural preservative.

2. For the lemon deodorant – Juice of 2 lemons will last you for one week. Make sure to prepare fresh batch each week and use a spray bottle like this for easy storage and application.

3. It is important to keep in mind that a natural deodorant helps fight body odour and is not an antiperspirant. Which means you will sweat (It is good to sweat!) but you will not smell bad.

4. With any natural deodorant, you cannot expect it to be fragrant. This is meant to keep your body odour at a check and it will do just that. If you love your fragrances, invest in a classic perfume.

5. This is really important. Any natural deodorant should help you to keep your body odour at bay. But, if you think this does not work for any reason and you still have a ‘disturbing’ body odour, you must stop and look at what’s going on inside. If your hygiene is good then think about what you are eating. Our outside health is just a reflection of everything going on inside. Just don’t get back to using those bad deodorants without knowing the root cause of the bad body odour.

For me, it has been a complete switch in the deodorant department. That is because I found 3 alternatives that work very well. So, do your research and find out what works for you. Quitting even one dangerous product at a time matters. The change has to be gradual and natural.

I think that is all I have to share with you today. To sum up, I would like to say that quitting the commercial deodorants are going to be difficult. But, it is not impossible. The approach I have taken to have a more natural and cleaner lifestyle is by following the rule of moderation. I believe it is impossible to quit using a commercial product until you find a WORKING alternative. I try and go natural everywhere possible but I still use some commercial products as well. See what works for you and make the change – gradually.
