Hello beautiful people,

Are you ready to make some fragrant, homemade herbal hair oil for yourself and your family? Well, even if you are not ready as yet, I am sure by the time you finish reading this blog, you would be convinced enough to try it out for yourself.

I love making my own hair oil and I have been doing this for quite some time now. I love the process of collecting the herbs & seeds, infusing the herbs with my favourite blend of oils, relishing the aroma that fills my house while making the oil and then patiently waiting for a week until it infuses completely in the natural sunlight.

Ah, the process is so therapeutic and healing in itself. You know, just like meditation.

Before we begin, I would like to mention 2 things here –

1. First of all, If you noticed I titled this blog as ‘Homemade Herbal Hair Oil Recipe for Healthy Hair’. I did that on purpose. If I wanted, I could have written ‘long hair’, ‘shiny hair’ or any other ‘click-bait’ terms instead of ‘healthy hair’. But I did not do that because I want you to understand that no product on this earth is going to give you a quick fix to long (or shiny) hair.

Good things take time and all you need to do is to focus on having a good health (healthy hair, in this case) and not look for quick fixes. Other things automatically follow when health is taken care of.

2. Secondly, there is absolutely no hard and fast rule of making this oil. You do not need to have all the ingredients, to begin with (or) if you have more herbs than what is mentioned here, feel free to add that in whatever proportion you wish to.

You can customize this oil as per your wish and availability of ingredients. I think that’s the beauty of homemade, natural stuff. You can just begin with whatever you have.

Also, I have made a short video where you can see the making of this delicious, herbal hair oil. Please watch the video for all the detailed steps.

Homemade Herbal Hair Oil

Herbs & Seeds

There is no limit to the number of herbs you can use while making a homemade, herbal hair oil. I am listing some of the herbs that are mostly used in making hair oils traditionally.

Bringraj a.k.a Karsilankani
Amla (Indian Gooseberry)
Henna
Curry Leaf
Vetiver Root
Hibiscus Leaf
Hibiscus Flower
Tulsi (Indian Basil)
Neem
Methi (Fenugreek) Seeds
Kalonji (Nigella) Seeds
Brahmi
… and the list goes on.

For this herbal oil, I’ve used the following ingredients –

Amla – 2 (big)
Curry Leaves – A handful
Tulsi – A handful
Neem – A handful
Hibiscus Leaf – 10-15 leaves (Dry Hibiscus Leaf Powder)
Hibiscus Flower – 1 tbsp of dried, cut hibiscus petals. If you have access to fresh hibiscus flowers, use 4-5 flowers.(Dried Hibiscus Flower/Petals – I like to use this because I can also make Hibiscus Tea with this. Win-Win.)
Methi Seeds – 1 tbsp
Kalonji Seeds – 1 tbsp
Vetiver Root – A small bunch.

I crushed all the herbs roughly except methi seeds, kalonji seeds and vetiver roots. You can crush this using a mortar or pestle (or) use the regular blender. If you are using the blender, make sure to ‘crush it’ and not ‘puree it’. We just want the essence of the herbs to be released.

If you do not have access to the fresh herbs, you can use the dried, powdered herbs that are easily available online or at any local herb store.

Oils

Again, no dearth when it comes to the choice of oils. Just make sure to use 100% cold-pressed, organic oils for making these herbal oils. The quality of the oils reflects in the end product.

The base oil can either be coconut oil or sesame oil. I prefer to use equal quantity of both coconut and sesame oil because I like both the oils and they are very good for your hair.

Additionally, you can add castor oil and/or neem oil to the base oils. I prefer adding castor oil instead of neem oil because neem oil has a strong fragrance and it can interfere with the natural aroma of the herbs, flowers and seeds.

The ratio I follow is 1 part sesame oil: 1 part coconut oil: 1/2 part castor oil.

For this recipe, I’ve used 200ml each of coconut and sesame oils and 100 ml of castor oil.

Cold-pressed organic Sesame Oil – 200ml
Cold-pressed organic Coconut Oil – 200ml
Cold-pressed organic Castor Oil – 100ml

Infusing

First of, mix all the oils together in a heavy bottom pan and allow it to heat. Please make sure, the oil should be hot but should not be smoking hot. When you think the heat is sufficient, turn the gas to low and add the crushed herbs and seeds.

Be extra careful if you are using powdered herbs instead of fresh ones and ensure the temperature of the oil is optimum to not burn the herbs.

As soon as you add the herbs the oil will begin to froth. Once the frothing subsides, allow the herbs to infuse for some more time in the low heat.

At this stage you will notice the colour of your oil changing and your room smelling delicious. 🙂

Once your oil has cooled, filter it using a fine muslin cloth or a fine filter. Stuff a glass jar with the vetiver roots and transfer the filtered oil to the glass jar. Let this rest in direct sunlight for a week and that is it – you have your homemade herbal hair oil.

How do I use it?

I use this oil every time I wash my hair. I massage the oil into my scalp, hair and roots. Allow it to rest for an hour before washing it off with my shikakai powder/shampoo. That’s it!

I hope you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed making this hair oil. If you get a chance to make this one for yourself, please do share your experience with me and tag me on Instagram. I would love to see your herbal hair oil.

Thank You for reading!
